July, the Month of
Independence and Dependence
This isn’t a great month for English rule. Two
hundred thirty odd years ago Americans said they wanted to have
their own country and fought a war to bring it about. Here in 2008,
as I write this, 1000 archbishops, bishops, priests, deacons, and
lay people are gathering in Jerusalem to see how like-minded
Anglicans can work together for the Gospel of Jesus Christ
throughout the world. They are fighting an Ecclesial War to keep the
Anglican Church from following a cultural agenda that cherishes the
form, while losing the substance of the historic orthodox Church.
Our Archbishop Gregory and Bishop Bill are right in the middle of
this gathering. We can be very sure that God will use their
leadership to His Glory.
This meeting, GAFCon (Global Anglican Future
Conference, June 22-29) comes just before the Lambeth Conference in
July (a once-every-ten-year gathering in England of all, or most,
archbishops and bishops), a time when the Archbishop of Canterbury,
Rowan Williams, would rather have everyone’s attention on how we can
still all just get along, despite our differences. That is just not
possible anymore. There are things that do divide a Church.
This July could mark the second greatest loss for
the British Empire. Our War of Independence was the first separation
of a colony from the Empire, and now there is the real chance that
the locus of the Anglican Church will move from the Archbishop of
Canterbury and the British Empire to another Archbishop from perhaps
a former Colony of the Empire.
All I know for sure is that this is a month that
should be marked by our DEPENDENCE on God. We need to pray, pray,
pray--as if the spiritual lives of the next generation of Anglicans
depend on our prayers!
